Membership of the Magaliesberg Biosphere is open to anyone or any organisation that lives or works or has an interest in the Magaliesberg region and who agrees to comply with the Member’s Pledge.

Friends of the Biosphere is a special category of membership for people or organisations wishing to support the concept of the Magaliesberg Biosphere with financial contributions, assistance with time and skills, public support or in any other practical way.

Principles of Membership

Formal acceptance of the Principles is a basic condition of membership.  This commitment to continuously strive to sustain the natural and historical qualities of the Magaliesberg region, is assumed on completion of the questionnaire. 

The following are the guiding principles:

Water and air: To protect all natural water resources in the Magaliesberg Biosphere and maintain and enhance air and water quality in the region.

Biodiversity: To maintain and promote the conservation of biodiversity in the Magaliesberg Biosphere, both in terms of ecosystem integrity and species diversity.

Heritage resources: To protect and manage all types of heritage resources within the Magaliesberg Biosphere.

Visual aesthetics: To maintain the visual and aesthetic character of the Magaliesberg Biosphere.

Land use: To manage land use, the development of the built environment and recreation facilities without compromising the aesthetic appeal or ecological functions within the Magaliesberg Biosphere.

Socio-economic environment: To optimize potential economic and social development opportunities compatible with the Magaliesberg Biosphere, and to conserve the ability of the region to provide and support these opportunities in perpetuity.

Research, education and information: To provide opportunities for the constructive investigation, interpretation and dissemination of knowledge of the Magaliesberg Biosphere.

Good governance: To comply with the spirit and letter of legislation and legal frameworks that serve the interests of the Magaliesberg Biosphere, to oppose corruption or malpractice that undermines the principles of the Biosphere and to encourage other users of the Magaliesberg to do likewise.

International registration: To co-operate with the appropriate state/international authorities to have the region declared a Biosphere under the UNESCO MAB  programme.

Members' Rights and Responsibilities

The Magaliesberg Biosphere is a registered Company. The legal name of the Company is:

The registered objective of the Company is: “The conservation and protection of the Magaliesberg Biosphere by promoting research, education and sustainable development.

Members of the Magaliesberg Biosphere are entitled to:

  • Participate in the management and activities of the Magaliesberg Biosphere as detailed in the company Articles of Association.
  • Stand for, and participate in, the appointment of the Board of Directors of the Magaliesberg Biosphere Company.
  • Use, display and be associated with the Magaliesberg Biosphere registered trademark and to use it responsibly as a symbol of the principles underlying the Magaliesberg Biosphere.
  • Enjoy the benefits of association and international links with the UNESCO MAB Movement.
  • Enjoy all legal and tax benefits conferred by virtue of membership of an association incorporated under not-for-profit section of the Companies Act.

Should members fail to uphold the conditions of the Principles of Membership the Board of Directors of the Magaliesberg Biosphere may, at its discretion, withhold or withdraw membership and all rights and responsibilities, including the right to be associated with the Magaliesberg Biosphere registered trademark
