When the nominations for the Board of the Magaliesberg Biosphere concluded at the end of 2015, there were no nomination in the stakeholder groups of mining, Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site and that of Land Occupiers.
The appointed Board resolved to re-open the nomination process for these stakeholder groups, and four nominations were received. During October 2016 the Stakeholders in the Magaliesberg Bioshere were invited to vote for the nominee of their choosing.
Two candidates now join the Board of the Magaliesberg Biosphere. The Board congratulated and welcomes Professor Jasper Knight and Ms Tshegofatso Tyira.
For the Cradle of Humankind, World Heritage Site -
Prof Knight is employed by the University of the Witwatersrand where he is the Professor of Physical Geography.
He is a geoscientist with interests in landscape evolution, heritage and management. He holds a PhD in Geology.
Professor Knight was nominated by the Head of the School: Geography, Archaeology and Environmental Studies, Fethi Ahmed, who states in the nomination:
"Professor Jasper Knight is a geoscientist with interest in landscape evolution, heritage and management. He is a well published scholar. Professor Knight will bring to the Board an in-depth knowledge of landscape ecology / management and expertise in heritage management. "
Ms Tyira lists the following qualifications -

• National Diploma in Environmental Management, Tshwane University of Technology, 1999
She is presently employed as the Head: Corporate Sustainability at Royal Bafokeng Platinum.
She has 16 years of working experience in the environmental management field, of which 11 years in the mining sector.
She says "I am very passionate about environmental management and conservation of natural resources. I have also worked as an Environmental Consultant for Syears where I provided number of environmental services for different industries (including mining) which included but not limited to environmental due diligence studies, Environmental Impact Assessments; Environmental Management programs and amendments, Public participation processes, environmental management systems and training. I will bring to the board knowledge and experience I have learned over the years and will contribute towards ensuring the conservation of the biodiversity and sustainable use of natural resources in Magaliesberg Biosphere."
Ms Tyira is nominated by the CEO of Royal Bafokeng Platinum, Steve Phiri. In the nomination he states:
Tshego is a young, vibrant lady who is very passionate about the work she does. She is a hard worker, a leader and a great team player who is always prepared to go extra mile to achieve her goals.
She joined RBPlat in 2008 as an Environmental Manager and was in 2014 appointed as our Head: Corporate Sustainability. She holds various degrees including master's degree in Environmental management and has 16 years working experience in the environmental field of which 11 years is in mining. Prior to joining RBPlat, Tshego was an Environmental Coordinator at Anglo Platinum operations, and was also an Environmental Consultant at two independent environmental consulting firms.
Through her expertise, she has assisted the organization in developing and implementing the formalized Environmental Management System in line with the ISO 14001 Standard and ensured that key environmental authorizations are obtained and adhered to. The latter, has contributed in assisting RBPlat in gaining both the social and legal license to operate hence ensuring the sustainability of the mine. She has through collaboration with different Heads of Departments identified and prioritized key sustainability issues for the organization and has developed management and monitoring systems and procedures to address them with the purpose of ensuring compliance and creating value for our stakeholders.
Being very systematic and passionate about environmental issues, Tshego will definitely add value in providing strategic direction for the protection, sustainable development and utilization of the Magaliesberg Biosphere.
