Any Biosphere consists of three zones - the core, a buffer and transition zone. The Magaliesberg Biosphere proposes that Conservancies established in Gauteng and North West will comprise the Buffer Zone, essentially a ring around the core, the Magaliesberg Mountain range.
In the months to come, Conservancy members will have the opportunity to give input on this proposal, evaluate and comment on the code and constitution and formally join the Biosphere with appropriate publicity.
John Wesson, Chairman of the North West Conservancy Association, announced that two new conservancies were being established in the Biosphere - one urban and one fishing. The urban Conservancy, a first for North West has been established at Xanadu Eco Park, west of Hartebeespoort dam. The conservancy includes an important wetland system on the Swartspruit river. A comprehensive management plan has been drawn up to address the sustainable protection of red data species like African Grass Owl.
Another new conservancy will be formally established in Gauteng in June.
