Hartbeespoort Dam is one of the most significant dams in the economic hub of the North West Province. It is also a hypertrophic dam, meaning it contains excessive nutrients such as phosphates and nitrates. An Integrated Biological Remediation Programme, referred to as Harties, Metsi a me (My water) seeks solutions to the infamous water problems at the dam.

The Magaliesberg Biosphere Initiative Group (MBIG) is gearing up for the management of the Biosphere to be in the hands of a formally appointed Board, drawn from the members of the Biosphere.
A non-profit company - the Magaliesberg Biosphere - is currently being registered by the law firm, Bell Dewar & Hall and should be completed soon. For the purposes of registration, members of the MBIG will fulfil the role of directors. As soon as a large enough number of the Biosphere community have become members, the directors will be replaced through an election process.

On the 2 August 2010, the new Environmental Impact Assessment Regulations came into effect. The Regulations align with the amendments made to the National Environmental Management Act (2008), and introduce a third listing.
The additional listing provides for geographical areas which will trigger the need for an environmental impact assessment, irrespective of other thresholds.
The Magaliesberg Biosphere Initiative sets out to ensure that viable ecosystems are retained - ecosystems in which natural processes and species populations thrive and continue to serve mankind. The project also pursues the safeguarding of places of historic, cultural and heritage significance.
