The Magaliesberg Biosphere Initiative sets out to ensure that viable ecosystems are retained - ecosystems in which natural processes and species populations thrive and continue to serve mankind. The project also pursues the safeguarding of places of historic, cultural and heritage significance.
The Magaliesberg Biosphere therefore has three very broad functions:
Research and learning
It is the people who work and live in the Magaliesberg Biosphere, who are able to directly affect the outcome of these functions.
A member’s pledge describes commitment to sustainable use of the region.
Kofi Annan, UN secretary General said “Our biggest challenge in this new century is to take an idea that seems abstract – sustainable development – and make it into a daily reality “
The pledge is intended to make “sustainable development” less theoretical, and more personal.
Water and air: To protect all natural water resources in the Magaliesberg Biosphere and maintain and enhance air and water quality in the region.
Biodiversity: To maintain and promote the conservation of biodiversity in the Magaliesberg Biosphere, both in terms of ecosystem integrity and species diversity.
Heritage resources: To protect and manage all types of heritage resources within the Magaliesberg Biosphere.
Visual aesthetics: To maintain the visual and aesthetical character of the Magaliesberg Biosphere.
Land use: To manage land use, the development of the built environment and recreation facilities without compromising the aesthetic appeal or ecological functions within the Magaliesberg Biosphere.
Socio-economic environment: To optimize potential economic and social development opportunities compatible with the Magaliesberg Biosphere, and to conserve the ability of the region to provide and support these opportunities in perpetuity.
Research, education and information: To provide opportunities for the constructive investigation, interpretation and dissemination of knowledge of the Magaliesberg Biosphere.
Good governance: To comply with the spirit and letter of legislation and legal frameworks that serve the interests of the Magaliesberg Biosphere, to oppose corruption or malpractice that undermines the principles of the Biosphere and to encourage other users of the Magaliesberg to do likewise.
International registration: To co-operate with the appropriate state and international authorities to have the region declared a Biosphere under the USESCO Man and the Biosphere initiative.
