What do Whiskey Marmalade and Duvets have in common?
The Answer: The irrepressible energy of Karen Harmse, and “The Valley Market”
“I want to create the opportunity for small producers to sell their wares and for you (and me) to have a way to shop from local, sustainable and niche enterprises,” says Karen.
The Valley Market is an online service. It is Karen’s brainchild and carries her stamp of enthusiasm and positive “can do” spirit.
With a warm smile, Karen says that bringing this venture into being gave her the opportunity to get to know her neighbours.
"Meeting neighbours led to sampling products and produce, and putting people in touch with one another. I dream that this becomes an example of how small local enterprises can leverage off our beautiful natural environment and each other, building personal, community and environmental sustainability”.
Karen explains that the success of The Valley Market relies on combining the benefits of ‘earth friendly’ concepts such as slow food and sustainable farming, personal ideals of health and rural living, with effective, web-based marketing platforms.
The Valley Market will initially deliver fresh, healthy farm products and crafts within the area of the Buffelspoort Valley Conservancy (Rietfontein, Grootfontein, Kromrivier, Buffelspoort, Kroondal and Rustenburg area). The service also targets visitors to the region.
"When you arrive at your self-catering destination, we will have delivered a beautiful package of fresh, local products," says Karen. Choose from cheese, bread, nuts, jams and preserves, fruit, vegetables, honey and pre-prepared meals.
Well known producers include Oliveberry’s well loved sour dough breads, and Ducko down products.
The website also features places to stay, things to do and restaurants.
