Conservancies

The Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site and legally recognised conservancies that surround the Magaliesberg Protected Natural Environment (MPNE) in Gauteng and North West form the Buffer Zone in the Magaliesberg Biosphere. These voluntary association of land owners, land users and residents are an important component in the Magaliesberg Biosphere.

WESSA Northern Areas Region

The Northern Areas Region (NAR) of WESSA covers a vast range of habitats and protected areas in the northern part of South Africa. These include a number of key national, provincial and biosphere reserves. The region is comprised of Gauteng, North West, Limpopo and Mpumalanga (excluding the Lowveld region), with Gauteng being its main area of operation.

Crocodile River Reserve

The 30 year-old Rhenosterspruit Nature Conservancy is finally evolving into a fully-fledged, proclaimed nature reserve – the Crocodile River Reserve! The involved legal process needed to bring a conservancy to this critical point was begun by the late Mercia Komen more than six years ago. The CRR will initially cover around 3 500 hectares and in 10 years it will double in size.

Nature Reserve status has been offered in five clusters to 120 landowners in Rhenosterspruit, Riverside Estates North, Central (consisting of Vlakfontein, Hills&Dales, Riverside Estate South, Roodekrans, and Hennops), Doornrandje, and Schurveberg (consisting of Vlakplaats and Schurveberg).
