The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) Man and Biosphere programme (MAB) aims to address some of the challenges faced where populations and protected areas meet, through a world network of biosphere reserves. The reserves are established to deal with the difficulty of how to reconcile the conservation of biodiversity and maintain associated cultural values, while pursuing economic and social development (UNESCO, 1996).
