Step out this spring and experience the MAJAKANENG HERITAGE TRAIL during heritage month
Majakaneng is a friendly rural township, with a population of about 25 000, within the Magaliesberg Biosphere about 14 km along the N4 from Brits towards Rustenburg.
The town lies on the northern slope of the Magaliesberg range and the Heritage Hiking Trail starts at the edge of town, winding its way up to the mountain summit where hikers experience incredible views in all directions while walking along the ridge-line. Eventually the trail descends through a wooded kloof of spectacular forest trees alongside a mountain spring and stream. The heritage trail is a 10km circular hike. Other trail options include a 5 km circular route that reaches the top of the first northern ridge, or an easy 3km walk through the shady forest and kloof.
Many excellent examples of British fortifications from the South African War are dotted along the summit and if hikers are very quiet, they may get a glimpse of the resident pair of endangered Mountain Reedbuck who appear to have successfully reared a young calf this season, as now there are three!
Comprehensive trail signage covers the historical and cultural heritage of Majakaneng and the geology along the trail with detailed geological maps of the region. Tree identification tags and ecology and biodiversity aspects are covered in separate signage. Management of all trail operations is by local residents – the knowledgeable and passionate trail rangers who always provide interesting insight and stories along the trail, making a guided trail experience worthwhile.
The trail base has basic facilities and a safe place to park your car and rest or braai after your hike.
In 2021, the Magaliesberg Biosphere Not for Profit Company (NPC) secured funding for the establishment of the trail through the German Commission for UNESCO, who support sustainable development in UNESCO designated sites in Africa. The trail has been open since December 2021 with very favourable reviews from visitors from all walks of life.
Trail Cost: R100 for a ranger-guided, or self-guided hike, and R40 conservation fee per car.
