Think about what we throw away – seeing not waste, but opportunity.

Recycling is a key part of the circular economy, helping to protect our natural resources. Each year the ‘Seventh Resource’ (recyclables) saves over 700 million tonnes in CO2 emissions and this is projected to increase to 1 billion tons by 2030. There is no doubt recycling is on the front line in the war to save the future of our planet and humanity. (https://www.globalrecyclingday.com)

Hello, I’ve recently moved to Hekpoort, and I’m looking for community / volunteer groups working with environmental issues (I have a wildlife rehab course and have been part of the Joburg rehab groups). I am an educator working with environment and nature-based education and conflict-management and have spent the last year working in the Vembhe Biosphere in Limpopo. Looking forward meeting single-minded people in the area! We also have a compost and are big recyclers. If you can direct me to any recycling (plastic/glass/tin/paper) centres in the area would be great. Thanks!

Hi Marie, Thanks for being in touch. it would be fabulous to work and learn with you. We have noticed a severe lack of and shortage of recycling centres outside of the major cities. Of course this is a major problem and obstacle to reducing our waste as we in the peri-urban areas do not have serviced waste removal, or sustainable ways of removing waste. I know of two recycling centres run by local township communities north of the Magaliesberg Mountains. @loveyourearth in Majakaneng, and @valdorgreen in Mmagau….. This is something to address and work on with local municipalities, and partnering with those operational recycling operations in the cities, if there are no local entrepreneurs ready to take on the challenge.
